Everyone talks about the Algarve, but here’s a little secret: the Silver Coast is where Portugal hides its wild beauty. Staying at our Casa Piccadilly, we’ve had plenty of days with sandy toes, salty hair, and sunsets that leave you speechless. The best part? No endless crowds. Just the ocean, fresh air (okay, a bit windy and misty sometimes), and that feeling of freedom.
Here are our five favorite Silver Coast beaches – all just a short drive away.
Planning Your Silver Coast Beach Escape
1. Baleal (20 min drive) – Surf Vibes & Endless Horizons
Baleal is where we go when we need a mix of energy and ease. On one side: perfect surf waves, on the other: calm bays. Families, surfers, and sunset-chasers all blend here.
Our tip: Grab a cold drink at Taberna do Ganhão – the terrace view over the cliffs is unbeatable.
2. Peniche (25 min drive) – Portugal’s Surf Capital Raw & Real
World-famous for surf competitions, Peniche is a little rough around the edges – and that’s exactly the charm. It’s buzzing with local life, seafood restaurants, and surfboards everywhere.
Our tip: Skip the touristy spots and order fresh grilled sardines at a small tasca near the port. Cheap, delicious, unforgettable.
Favorite beach: Supertubos.
3. Foz do Arelho (15 min drive) – Between Lagoon & Atlantic
This is where contradictions meet in the best way: calm lagoon waters perfect for a swim, and just across the sandbank, the wild Atlantic for kite- and windsurfers. We love coming here when we can’t decide between lazy or adventurous.
Our tip: End the day at super simple beach bar O Banheiro – toes in the sand, beer in hand, and the sun melting into the lagoon.
Távola Lagoa has nice seafood.
4. Praia do Bom Sucesso (15 min drive) – A Wide & Wild Hidden Local Favorite
Sometimes we just want space. Bom Sucesso is all about endless sand, dunes, and peace. Perfect for long walks, quiet afternoons, or reading a book while the Atlantic hums in the background.
Our tip: Bring a picnic and watch the sunset from the dunes – it feels like your own private beach.
5. Nazaré (40 min drive) – The Giant Wave Legend
Even if you’re not a surfer (trust us, those waves are terrifying up close), Nazaré is a must. It’s thrilling, dramatic, and the scenery beautiful. In winter, the waves reach record-breaking heights. In summer, it’s a lively seaside town with great food and a real Portuguese vibe.
We prefer the north beach, even though it's wild and you can't swim there. Nazaré is actually quainter at the top of the hill than in the 'lower town'.
Our tip: watch the waves from Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo. Okay, we admit it's not a hidden gem anymore, but it's still the best spot. And yes, order the cheap and delicious pastéis de nata from the little bakeries around the market square.
The beauty of Casa Piccadilly is this: you wake up in a quiet little village, sip your coffee in peace – and in 15–30 minutes, you can be barefoot on one of Portugal’s most stunning beaches. Whether you’re surfing, strolling, swimming, or just staring at the horizon, the Silver Coast has a way of slowing you down and filling you up.
